95 degrees in Atlanta.... the Highland Inn was fantastic.
I stayed at the Highland Inn, which was great- if you ever stay there on a weekend make sure to request a room that doesn't face the courtyard because it's super loud at night. My room faced the parking lot, but I got a heads up from Kurt.

Princeton Architectural Press 2008 Fall Catalog

Princeton Architectural Press 2008 Fall Catalog

I've posted a few other pictures in the flickr account.

Tonight we shot the opening sequence for the 20 minute clip that will screen at Light Industry in NYC June 10th. With the help of Bobby and Andrew of Specialentertainment.com and my fantastic editor Cris we took a little over 4 hours to set-up, hand sew the movie title and break down the set.

I feel like I did a fairly good job of free-handing the lettering for the titles, it was harder than I expected and my fingers are RAW!

Why is it that everything always happens at the same time, or within the same week? Yesterday I spent the day at Paper Boat working but did a little multi-tasking doing gocco printing on these sweet poppy color mini-folders that fit a DVD perfectly for the press kits we plan to send out next week for the silent art auction. Here is the end result:

Presenter and Performer Information

Heather Arnet

Heather Arnet serves as the chief spokesperson, fundraiser, and advocate for the organization. Since joining the Foundation as its first Executive Director, she has spearheaded Women and Girl's Foundation's efforts to pursue legislation at the city, county, and state levels for fair representation for women on Pennsylvania's appointed boards, authorities, and commissions. In 2004, Arnet was selected as one of Pittsburgh's "Top 40 under 40" by Pittsburgh Magazine. In 2003 she was honored with an award in "Art and Activism" from the Thomas Merton Center for Social Justice, and in 2005 AAUW awarded Heather a "Friend of Equity Award" for her work in fighting for women's rights.

Vanessa German

Slam poet and visual artist, Vanessa German, has shown and performed throughout the country. A featured performer at the International Arts Festival in Grahmstown, South Africa, Vanessa's performance poetry could be seen and heard in Germany, Sweden, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Olympia, and New Mexico. Vanessa was a 2005 and 2006 nominee for Emerging Artist of the Year at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. She is the National Slam Bush Champion, Ink Tank Slam Champion, and was voted Best Spoken-word Poet by the Pittsburgh City Paper.

Guerrilla Girls

In their own words … Who are the Guerrilla Girls?

We're a bunch of anonymous females who take the names of dead women artists as pseudonyms and appear in public wearing gorilla masks. We have produced posters, stickers, books, printed projects, and actions that expose sexism and racism in politics, the art world, film and the culture at large. We use humor to convey information, provoke discussion, and show that feminists can be funny. We wear gorilla masks to focus on the issues rather than our personalities. Dubbing ourselves the conscience of culture, we declare ourselves feminist counterparts to the mostly male tradition of anonymous do-gooders like Robin Hood, Batman, and the Lone Ranger. Our work has been passed around the world by kindred spirits who we are proud to have as supporters. It has also appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, Bitch and Bust; on TV and radio, including NPR, the BBC and CBC; and in countless art and feminist texts. The mystery surrounding our identities has attracted attention. We could be anyone; we are everywhere. (http://www.guerrillagirls.com/)

Faythe Levine

Faythe Levine is an artist and organizer based out of Milwaukee, WI. She is currently working on her first documentary film Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY Art, Craft and Design which is due to premier in 2009. She is the co-author of a book under the same title published by Princeton Architectural Press that will be released in November 2008. Faythe is the founder and coordinator of Art vs. Craft, co-owner of brick and mortar space Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery and does freelance curating and design work. She also plays the musical saw in the experimental musical group Wooden Robot. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Utne Reader, Venus Magazine, Paper Magazine, and American Craft Magazine.

Growing up in Seattle during the 1990's gave Levine firsthand exposure to many punk bands and the riot grrrl scene. This underground community quickly exposed her to DIY ethics, and she learned early on that you could release, self-publish and distribute your music and zines through a vast nationwide network of like-minded people. In 2003, she found herself looking at an emerging movement that embraced both art and community, which can now loosely be defined as "the new wave of craft." This movement is exploring the uncertainty of where fine art meets craft, redefining and reclaiming creativity. The new wave of craft is influenced by the history and techniques of traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art.

Soma Mestizo

Christiane D's lyrics tell unconventional stories in traditionally prose or poetic ways – more extreme that the folk ballads of Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan. Leach's stories are like movies, with scenes set and emotions conveyed through the eyes of the characters, rather than recounting the exploits of "Frankie and Johnny". At times, these songs can push the envelope of music, such as on "Next Victim", a disturbing, percussion-laden track on Peepshow that stretches the border between song and prose.-Justin Hopper – City Paper.

Elizabeth Perry

Elizabeth Perry is a writer and new media artist. Her sketchbook journal may be found at www.elizabethperry.com/woolgathering, where she has been blogging since 2002. She is a fellow at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University and a founding editor of the award-winning Pittsburgh Signs Project, an online public art project documenting the visual landscape of western Pennsylvania (www.pittsburghsigns.org). Perry works at The Ellis School, an all-girls independent school in Pittsburgh, where she helps teachers integrate technology into a PK-12 curriculum. She has spoken and taught workshops about blogging and other new technology for artists both locally at venues like the Mattress Factory Museum and the Technology and the Arts conference at Carnegie Mellon University, and nationally at conferences like BlogHer (San Jose, 2006; Chicago, 2007) and She's Geeky (Mountain View, CA, 2007).

Nicole Reynolds

The 24-year-old Pittsburgh native's most recent disc, "This Arduous Alchemy," is a collection of fetching come-ons and bittersweet yearning — or, in her own words, a "breakup and recovery album" — draped against a pastoral background of tuneful folk strains and rootsy meanderings infused with a jazz swing.

REVIEW:
Making Stuff For Kids
Black Dog Publishing, 2007

I first spied this book on Heidi Kenney’s flickr account since her cute House Pin Board is on the cover (the "how to" project is on page 116). I touched base with Black Dog Publishing who quickly sent over a copy for review.

I am a part of the long list of creative makers in their 30’s who’s crafty roots started as a kid at summer camp, girl scouts and most importantly at home. I agree completely with Victoria Woodcock who wrote the introduction, who reminds us that “….making stuff adds balance to a child’s leisure time and teaches them important skills such as using imagination, dexterity and problem-solving.”

The book itself is a fine piece of work from Heidi’s house on the front to the cute, colorful layout within its 160 pages. I really like Camilla Stacey’s “Egghead” (page 54) project that states “grow something you can eat in something you have eaten” where you plant a mini garden in egg shells decorated as heads. I’m also a fan of the “Color By Stitches” project by Suzie Fry (page 96) and the “Wall Decals” by Susan Rowe Harrison (page118)

“Making Stuff For Kids” is a great book for parents who may want to dive in a make a project along side their child! There are 50 projects to pick from all with simple steps laid out for projects that include sewing, cutting, pasting, knitting, etc. Each project is tagged with symbols to warn you if adult supervision is needed, messes will be made or if it is a project that will take time and patience. “Making Stuff For Kids” is a great book for your craft library (kids or no kids to be honest)- or a perfect book for a birthday present for your friends little one's!!

Craft INC.
Turn Your Creative Hobby Into a Business
Meg Mateo Ilasco
Chronicle Books, 2007

I love this book. I only wish I had it when I launched my crafty business Flying Fish Design in 2002. First of all, the size of the book itself is perfect for toting around in your purse, the chapters are outlined in a really great way and the books’ corners are rounded to top it all off. Great design!!

I love the through advice that Meg gives, starting with creating time and space to start your business. Throughout this book there is advice, tools, resources and ideas; everything you need to establish a structure (or restructure) your business. There are also great discussions/interviews with women who have their own creative businesses, these featured ladies offer up really great feedback from their experience.

As I am flipping back through the pages to see what I highlighted when I read the book on my flight to Tucson last month, I am realizing that I tabbed too many pages to talk about. Honestly, there is just so much amazing information crammed in this 160 paperback to try and relay in a quick review. I think that both established and aspiring creative business owners should have this book in their library. Fantastic read and great resources!

My advice, pick up this gem if you don't have it already!

Wanted: Assistant Editor (Milwaukee/Chicago based)

Handmade Nation - a documentary about the indie craft community - is looking for a part time assistant editor (approx 15-20 hours a week) to help in the pre-editing process of raw footage. You will be working under the direction of editor Cris Siqueira. The ideal candidate should have basic knowledge of Final Cut Pro and preferably (but not necessarily) access to a computer with enough memory and space to run the software. This is a good opportunity for editors in training to work in a feature-length project. Please watch our youtube clip before applying to get an essence of the project http://youtube.com/watch?v=zH2HWPfwpOw. Hourly rate $7 per hour to start.

Please email indiecraftdocumentary@gmail.com with "Assistant Editor Application" in the subject line:
  • contact information (name, phone, email)
  • a short resume that includes any editing experience
  • links to any work available to view online
I just posted this exact post on Super Naturale and I don't think I really need to change it for here.

I was passed a link to this discussion thread via Sabrina Gschwandtner who received it from Andrew Wagner. I highly recommend anyone who has interest, investment or pride about what we call "indie craft" to take a gander and give your two cents. And I second the suggestion of Annie who wrote the initial blog post who states "you might want to brew a cup of coffee before you sit down for this one . . ."

Right before I left for Tucson I received a copy of “I Heart Felt: 33 inspired eye popping projects for the inspired knitter” by Kathleen Taylor published by Taunton Press for review. I’ve spent the last hour of my flight thumbing though it, learning about the process of felting and the final outcomes when using different yarns and reading about the projects that Kathleen has laid out for you step by step.

I found “I Heart Felt” to be clean and colorful, with an easy to read layout. The book is broken down into four basic segments: 1. The Basics, 2. Playing With Texture, 3. Using Color and 4. Exploring Embellishments. The 33 projects that fall within these four chapters all include a material list, knitting directions, sizing directions and any additional sewing instructions.

I definitely recommend this book for people who have some basic/advanced knitting skills; the projects go from simple adornments to advanced knitting patterns so make sure you brush up on your stitches before making your yarn purchases.

I think that the best thing about “I Heart Felt” is that the maker can use it as a platform for his or her own creative process and projects. Available on Amazon.com HERE.

This is an old card from when I still ran my crafty biz Flying Fish Design

Happy Valentines Day, I'm in the Chicago airport on my way to Tucson, AZ to visit a friend and warm up a bit. On my way to Chicago via bus from Milwaukee I took notes on CRAFT INC. the first book I will be reviewing out of the stack I received last week.

Today marks the laucnh of a new online magazine called DIY City Magazine, editor Wendy did a phone interview with me a few weeks back about the documentary and you can see their article and fantastic layout HERE.

From the mouth of the editors:
DIY City is an online magazine that celebrates the independent artist and the DIY spirit. The idea for the mag grew out of a need to find art supplies and resources in New York City. NYC was a natural pick for our first issue as it seems that just about everyone moonlights doing some type of creative work. DIY, or do-it-yourself, has a broad range of meanings. For us it represents the creative spirit of individuals making things in a move away from mass production. Some of the DIYs we've met make wares to give or trade with others, while many others make them to sell in the ever growing DIY marketplace.

In our first issue you will find NYC themed products, as well as some of our favorite DIY resources. We will also bring you an inside look at some indie designers living and working in New York. Each issue will highlight a different, exciting DIY city. In the second issue of DIY City mag, we will bring you DIY stories and resources from New Orleans. We will also bring you daily stories of DIYs from around the globe at DIY City. DIY City mag may be coming soon to a city near you. Be sure to join our DIY City community at diycityguides.ning.com to help us build the most comprehensive resource guide for DIY. DIY City Community will be your place to locate do-it-yourself supplies, resources and indie artists in a city near you.

Look for the NYC symbol – this will be an indication that the indie designer or shop is located in NYC. We are always looking for contributors and DIY project submissions – e-mail us at diycitymag at gmail.com with your ideas.

We would like to thank all our contributors, designers, shop owners and friends that we have met along the way – without all of you DIY City would not exist.

Lets seeeeee. This week has panned out to be slightly disastrous including my cell phone (my only phone) getting run over by a car- which was my own fault, a scare with some of our media on a hard drive (note to self: back up laptop), and more time than I care to share with you spent on the phone with Verizon due to my ran over cell.

I usually never reference anything astrological since that is my dads job, but when Mercury goes retrograde it really messes me up.

However, I did receive an email from Sabrina Gschwandtner of KnitKnit who was on NPR this week- it's a great interview go HERE to check it out.

Also via the NPR site was video of the knitting drummer that I saw at Maker Faire in Austin this Fall. Here it is for those of you who were not there:
